Just six kilometers south, Cherai beach is the virtually untouched beach of Kuzhupilly;
rarely a single tourist on the beach, only the occasional fisherman and plenty of crabs.
High above, the sea eagle-circle the sky like pigeon in Venedic. Sun bathe on the beach,
go for a swim in the unbelievably warm Arabian Ocean or take one of the bicycles up to
Cherai for nice restaurant experience on the beach. You can chose between traditional
Kerala food or European cuisine while you watch the waves roll by.

Fort Kochi is the best-known tourist attraction in the Cochin area. Fort Kochi is historically
most important visitor attraction; it presents the spice trade between Europe and India as
well as the struggle of the Europeans to take hold of Kerala. For more information on Fort
Kochi read here:

We are constantly rediscovering Fort Kochi and try to be one step ahead of the Lonely
Planet reviews. ;)
We recommend about 5 hours to see the variety of attractions nearby. Discover it by
yourself by taking a walk around or we would be delighted to set you up with a rickshaw
tour. Just ask us when you arrive at The Sand Castle. Fort Kochi is about 45 minutes away
from the Sand Castle and can be reached easily by rickshaw, bus or taxi.
We created our own google map, have a look for our suggestions.

North from Fort Kochi is Vypin Island a small island that has only recently become known
on the tourist path. The main highlights of the Island are of course Cherai and Kuzhupilly
The island also has a wonderful lighthouse that can be visited daily from 3 to 5 pm.
Further, on the northern tip of the island you will find the Munambam fishing harbour. Be
sure to visit this spot early in the morning to see the first catch of the day displayed and
sold. It is quite amazing what the fisherman bring in!
The island has a series of fish farms that can also be visited and explored, and if you ask
nicely, maybe even from a traditional fishing canoe.

A nice day tour would be a visit to the Athirappilly Falls in the Thrissur district. The
waterfalls are nicknamed “The Niagara of India” and the attached park (although small)
make for an entertaining day out.
The best time to visit is shortly after the monsoon season, when the falls are in full flow.
Please feel free to read more about it, here.

From the rooftop of The Sand Castle alone you will be able to see a large variety of birds.
But if you are really into bird watching we suggest you wake up early with the sun rise and
walk on the roads through the back waters; aside from sea-eagles and hawks you will see
King Fishers, Bee eaters and a variety of exotic birds.

The easiest way to get to The Sand Castle from the Airport is by me sending a taxi to pick you up. If you would like that service please send me your flight info.
Cost: 1000 Rs. Time: 50 min.
Otherwise take a prepaid taxi to Kuzhupilly Beach (you might want to write it down, it is pronounced quite different), if he does not get it ask for Cherai Beach. Once at one of the main beaches, Cherai or Kuzhupilly you take a left, south (the ocean is on your right side), keep going till you see a house on the left side with an aluminum roof, that is The Sand Castle.. From Cherai 15 min. from Kuzhupilly 4 min. .
Cost: 850 Rs., plus Tips. Drive Time: 1 hr
If you just arrived, I recommend for you to buy a SIM Card at the Airport, outside of the Airport it is almost impossible to get a SIM Card. It makes communication within India much easier and much cheaper calling home.
